Schwarz-weiß, Nostalgie, Surrealismus, Niedlichkeit… wenn ein Cartoon dafür Pate steht, dann der 30er Jahre-Cartoon Betty Boop.
Begonnen hat alles mit der Talkartoon-Reihe. Die 42 kurzen Zeichentrickfilme dieser Reihe wurden von den Fleischer Studios produziert und von den Paramount Studios von 1929 bis 1932 gezeigt. Betty stieg 1930 in die Serie ein - damals noch als Pendant zu Bimbo dem Hund in einer angedeuteten Pudelform - 1932 wurde im Anschluß an die Talkartoon-Reihe die ganze Serie nach ihr benannt, und so erschien Ende 1932 dann der erste offizielle Betty-Boop-Cartoon.
Durch Betty wurde auch der Jazz richtig belebt. Größen wie Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher, 1932) oder Louis Armstrong (You Rascal You, 1932) durften Episoden mit ihrem Orchester einleiten.
Der letzte Betty-Boop-Cartoon wurde 1939 produziert.
Auf die Leinwand zurück kam Betty 1988 bei einem Gastauftritt in dem Film »Falsches Spiel mit Roger Rabbit« als schwarz-weißer Cartooncharakter. Außerdem ist der Zeichencharakter Toot Braunstein aus der Zeichentrickserie »Drawn Together« eine Persiflage auf Betty Boop.
